Poland Seminar: From Warsaw To Krakow And Auschwitz

32 Teachers heard testimony from Holocaust survivors, Confronting anti-Semitism

 

The second annual Poland seminar opened in Warsaw, hosted by the Museum of the History of Poland’s Jews (TOLI partner), and continued to Krakow, from where participants visited Auschwitz and concluded with the Jewish heritage festival.  Thirty-two teachers from throughout Poland attended the program, along with experts from abroad. Led by Oana Nestian-Sandu, TOLI European Director, the seminar featured testimonies from Holocaust survivor, Assia Raberman, and two succeeding generations, Mark Berez, President of TOLI and Jennifer Rotker.  The seminar was made possible by generous donations from the Mostysser family and from the Sam and Regina Greene Family Fund of the Jewish Endowment Foundation of Greater Charleston. It was also featured on the website of the US embassy.

Highlights from the 2019 Poland Seminar:

  • Testimonies from three generations of survivors, Assia Raberman, Mark Berez, Jennifer Rotker
  • Meeting between two Holocaust survivors, Assia Raberman and Lidia Maksymowicz
  • Guided visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
  • Guided visit to Schindler’s Factory Museum
  • Shabbat service
  • Shabbat dinner organized by the JCC with 750 participants from around the world
  • Anti-semitism in Poland in the past and in the present
  • History of the Holocaust in neighboring countries of Poland 
  • Workshops on teaching methods and approaches such as: the Butterfly project; teaching with testimonies; incorporating human rights education in teaching about the Holocaust.
  • Welcome speeches from Anna Azari, Ambassador of Israel to Poland and Dan Hastings, U.S. Embassy in Poland.
  • The seminar was organized in partnership with POLIN – Museum of the History of Polish Jews
  • The seminar was made possible by generous donations from the Mostysser family and from the Sam and Regina Greene Family Fund of the Jewish Endowment Foundation of Greater Charleston
  • We received over 100 applications and selected 32 participants
